CAFFEINE’S EFFECTS ON THE GERMINATION AND GROWTH OF GRASS. Elizabeth and Claire. The purpose of this lab was to determine the effects of several concentrations of caffeine in water on the germination and growth of grass seed. Several molarities of caffeine solution were made and fed to the grass once per day. Only the lowest concentration was used for the second phase of the experiment (growth) because higher concentrations seemed to not allow the grass to germinate. The only seeds which germinated were those watered with the lowest concentration of caffeine. This concentration’s effects on growth were also pronounced. The grass watered with a caffeine solution had a sickly color and was significantly less tall than the grass watered with water. People wanting to grow grass free from infestation by insects could use this information to determine how much caffeine grass can handle before their growth and germination are compromised.
